Fenouil et Puce Sables Chauds Rallye des Pyramides

From Friday April 16 to Sunday April 25, 2010

2010 RULES
(Subject to changes not altering the spirit of the event.)

A - Moral rules

1 - Solidarity among organizers, participants, raiders or any persons found in the desert is a duty.

2 - Clean Desert - zero tolerance!
During the race, for assistance or raiders, the rule is the same: you do not leave any waste behind you. At each camp, you will have a place to bring your garbage which will then be removed.

B - Technical rules

1 - Types

We accept any mechanically propelled vehicles on the ground, from any era, as long as they respect the safety and environmental rules.

2 - Styles

- Motorbikes
- Sidecars
- Quads (ATV)
- Side by Side Vehicles (SSV)
- Two-wheel drive (2WD or 2x4) cars
- Four-wheel drive (4WD or 4x4) cars
- Four-wheel drive (4WD or 4x4) trucks
- Six-wheel drive (6WD or 6x6) trucks
- Eight-wheel drive (8WD or 8x8) trucks
- Others: Consult us... Unlisted “mechanical cocktails” would be great too!

3 - Driver’s age & vehicle era

a) The driver’s age is not important.

b) The vehicle age & era:

“Prestige” = - 5 years
“Classic 1” = + 5 years
“Classic 2” = + 10 years
“Historic 1” = + 20 years
“Historic 2” = + 25 years
“Historic 3” = + 30 years
“Historic 4, 5, 6...” hopefully.

Is taken into account the 1st year of a model release.

For examples:

- the Toyota HDJ 80, built from 1989 to 1998, goes in “Historic 1”,
- the Toyota 60 goes in “Historic 2”,
- the Range Rover, gas, 2-door body, built from 1970 to 1995 goes in “Historic 3”,
- the 80 GS BMW motorbike, out in, 1980 goes in “Historic 2”,
- the Yamaha XT 500, built in 1976, goes in “Historic 3”.

Within these categories, you find known subcategories:

- motorbikes: 125 cc, 250 cc, 500 cc, 750 cc, + 750 cc & then one-stroke engines,
two-stroke engines & even more for tough guys
- cars: 4x2 & 4x4
- trucks: 4x4, 6x6 & 8x8.

All gas & diesel, of course.

And last, we expect all genders to enter the race.

Technical preparations

1 - Everything is allowed as long as it’s not dangerous for you & others.
In the categories “Classic” & “Historic” you must respect the technique & the spirit of the vehicle era.
The tyres, springs & shock absorbers can be modern.
For riders: modern motorbike safety equipment is mandatory.

2 - For the inside of your engine, we won’t be too harsh (go try & check a cylinder in a sandy wind anyway!) but we advise you to keep its original reliability to have fun with us till the end.

3 - Cars & trucks with robust roll cages & 3-point safety belts can be classified only.

C - Sporting rules

This event is by invitation only. The organization reserves ithe right to refuse anyone. An entry is taken into account once the total amount is fully paid & the vehicle cleared after scrutineering.
The crew of each vehicle is as followed: a rider per motorbike, two people per sidecar, one to three people per car or truck.

1 - Race numbers, number plates & advertisements

Any entering vehicles (assistance & raiders) must have their number plates & the advertisements of the organization.

Motorbikes:

- 34 x 34 cm spot on the rider’s back
- 22 x 16 cm oval plates at front + side plates
- 14 x 18 cm side stickers.

Cars:

- 10 x 30 cm windshield sticker banner
- 32 x 43 cm front & rear plates
- 50 x 50 cm doors & roof numbers.

Trucks:

Same as cars & 50 x 50 cm squares on both sides.

2 - Road book & maps

Each driver (assistance & raider) receives 1 set during scrutineering.

3 - Specials (SS)

They are taking place on & off-road without crossing any inhabited places.

4 - SS starts

Some are taken lined up, others 1 by 1 or 2 by 2 minute after minute.
On day 1, the start is taken by ascending order of the entry numbers & then according to standings.
Up to 15’ late, you are considered to have started at your ideal start time. Beyond you cannot start (we cannot delay our broom & medical safety vehicles forever). You then take the maximum penalty (classified last + 5h) & you join the next SS where you will start... if you arrive on time.

5 - SS finishes

Some are decided by time, others by distance. Those last are converted into penalties. Unfinished SS = classified last + 2 hours.

6 - Check points

2-hour penalty by missed C.P.

7 - Liaisons

They are not timed. The only criterion is to “point” before the start of another SS or before the start of the next day.

8 - “Check Point card” & route

Each morning we will give you a “Check Point card” that you must submit at any checking.
The route is mandatory, under disqualification penalty (for your safety). In case of mechanical problems, you will be allowed to use ways out or paved roads chosen by the organization only.

9 - Assistance

a) You can either take the road to the bivouac at any time or the race road according to the order of your assistance number 5 minutes after the last participant.
You will also receive a “Check Point card” daily to give back at the bivouac in the evening.

b) You are part of the “family” & you live the same adventure. In the desert you have the same rights & the same safety duties as the participants.

10 - Broom truck

In case of a failure, if you, your friends or your assistance cannot find any solutions, a broom truck will bring your vehicle to the nearest paved road & we will help you find a carrier to bring your vehicle to the nearest garage or even to Alexandria harbor.

11 - Engine noise, lighting, horn...

By special dispensation of the police in Cairo, the sound of your engine is free.
Your lights must work.

12 - Standings

All entering vehicles will be classified, except in case of unsporting conduct.
For obvious security reasons, no time will be taken at night.

Safety

1 - Water

Each rider must carry a 3-liter water safety reserve in addition to one’s normal consumption.
Each car or truck driver (or co-driver) must carry a 5-liter water safety reserve in addition to one’s normal consumption: 3 liters for oneself & 2 liters to help a rider in trouble.

2 - Navigation: GPS

It is mandatory. The simplest will do. There are some excellent starting at € 100. We will indicate you the GPS points of the race 1 week before your flight departure so that you can enter them quietly. You will receive your road book & maps at the airport.

3 - Satellite phone

It is mandatory. It is more convenient and more accurate than a marker because you can explain your possible mechanical or medical problem clearly.
We do not impose you a model: either you take one in which you enter our 3 priority numbers or we rent you one (~ € 120 (all included) + € 100 for calls).
Old marker?… Forget it! Sentinel horn?… Forget it! Off-road (90% of the trail), there is enough room to pass each other and race.

4 - Hand compass, smokes, survival blanket

They are mandatory.
You must have:
- 1 hand compass,
- 2 smokes (much more visible than hazard lights),
- 1 distress mirror with sighting target to attract attention by returning a ray of
sunshine in the eye of those who did not see you at first,
- 1 survival blanket allowing others to see you from a great distance, protecting you
from sunlight during the day & from cold at night, helping to wrap a casualty waiting
for paramedics or simply to protect you from a sandy wind.

5 - Safety autonomy

- Classic motorbikes, quads, side-cars & SSV = 200 km.
- Cars & trucks = 400 km.
